After India gained independence from Britain in 1947, Nehru became the country’s first Prime Minister. He held the office from 1947 until his death in 1964. During his time as Prime Minister, Nehru worked to build a modern, democratic, and secular India. He implemented land reforms, expanded educational opportunities, and promoted industrialization.
