About Goddess Ganga

Goddess Ganga, also known as the river Ganges, is one of the most revered and worshipped goddesses in Hinduism. She is believed to be the personification of the holy river Ganges, which is considered to be a sacred river in India.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga descended to earth from the heavens, in response to a prayer by King Bhagiratha, to purify the souls of his ancestors. It is believed that the river Ganges is not just a physical river, but also a spiritual entity that has the power to cleanse one’s sins and bring salvation.

Goddess Ganga is often depicted as a beautiful woman with a white saree, riding on a crocodile or a Makara (a mythical sea creature). She is also depicted holding a pot (kalash) or a lily in her hand. The goddess is usually worshipped by offering water and flowers to her image or by taking a dip in the holy river Ganges.

Goddess Ganga is also associated with several other Hindu deities, including Lord Shiva, who is believed to have tamed the fierce flow of the river with his locks of hair, and Lord Vishnu, who is said to have received the river on his feet to save the earth from drowning.

The worship of Goddess Ganga is particularly important during the Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival that is celebrated once every 12 years at four different locations in India, where millions of people take a dip in the holy river Ganges to purify their souls and seek blessings from the goddess.
