Biography of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, also known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was a Catholic nun and missionary who dedicated her life to helping the poor and sick. She was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, which is now part of North Macedonia.

At the age of 18, she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and was sent to India to teach at a school in Calcutta. She later founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, a congregation devoted to caring for the poorest of the poor.

Mother Teresa and her followers established hospices, clinics, and homes for people with leprosy, tuberculosis, and other diseases. She also set up orphanages, shelters for the homeless, and schools for the impoverished children of Calcutta. Her work expanded to other parts of India and around the world, earning her international recognition and numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Mother Teresa’s life and work were inspired by her deep faith in God and her belief in the importance of serving others. She was known for her humility, simplicity, and compassion, and her devotion to helping those in need inspired millions around the world.

Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, but her legacy lives on through the Missionaries of Charity, which continues to serve the poor and sick in over 130 countries. She was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003 and canonized as a saint in 2016.
