What is Dolotsav?
Dolotsav, also known as Dol Jatra or Dol Purnima, is a Hindu festival celebrated in the spring season, usually in the month of March. It is particularly popular in the eastern parts of India, such as West Bengal, Assam, and Odisha.
The festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna and commemorates his playful pastimes with the gopis (milkmaids) of Vrindavan. The word “dol” means “swing”, and the festival involves the swinging of idols of Radha and Krishna on a decorated swing or palanquin.
On the day of Dolotsav, people dress up in new clothes and visit temples to offer prayers and seek blessings from Lord Krishna. They also smear each other with colors, sing and dance to the beat of traditional drums, and enjoy festive foods like sweets and snacks.
In some places, particularly in West Bengal, Dolotsav is also associated with the worship of the goddess Durga, and is celebrated as a part of the larger festival of Basanta Utsav or Vasant Utsav. The festival is a time of joy, happiness, and celebration, and is considered to be a symbol of the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil.
