About Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada, which usually falls in August or September of the Gregorian calendar.

The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion all over India, especially in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan. People observe fasts, offer prayers and perform various rituals to seek blessings from Lord Krishna. Temples are beautifully decorated, and the devotees engage in devotional singing and dancing, known as “bhajans” and “kirtans,” throughout the day and night.

On this day, people also prepare various delicacies and sweets, such as “panjiri,” “laddoo,” and “kheer,” which are offered to Lord Krishna as part of the celebrations. The festival culminates with the breaking of a pot (Dahi Handi) filled with curd, which is tied at a height, and groups of young men form human pyramids to break it.

Krishna Janmashtami is not just a festival, but it also holds great cultural and religious significance for the Hindus, as Lord Krishna is considered to be an avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu and a symbol of love, righteousness, and compassion.
