Biography of Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was an Indian monk, philosopher, and spiritual leader who played a key role in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He was born as Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta, India.

As a young man, Vivekananda was deeply influenced by the teachings of his guru, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who taught him about the universal nature of all religions and the existence of a single divine reality. After Ramakrishna’s death, Vivekananda embarked on a spiritual journey across India, seeking to deepen his understanding of Indian culture, philosophy, and spirituality.

In 1893, Vivekananda represented Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. His speech, which began with the famous words “Sisters and brothers of America,” made a deep impression on the audience and helped to introduce Indian spirituality to the West.

After his return to India, Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, a spiritual organization that sought to promote the teachings of Ramakrishna and Vedanta. He also established several educational institutions, including the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya and the Vivekananda College.

Vivekananda’s teachings were based on the principles of Vedanta, which emphasizes the oneness of all beings and the importance of self-realization. He emphasized the need for people to cultivate their inner spiritual nature and to work for the betterment of society.

Vivekananda passed away on July 4, 1902, at the young age of 39. However, his legacy continues to inspire millions of people around the world, and his teachings on spirituality, education, and social reform continue to be studied and practiced by many.
